After Elizabeth Gilbert’s Cleveland appearance this winter as part of the Cuyahoga County Library Writer’s Center Stage series, I had pages of notes demanding full-on essay treatment.
That was November.
In the little notebook I carry in my purse, there are four scrawled pages crammed between cabinet measurements for our kitchen renovation and notes from an early morning school levy campaign meeting. No essay. No grand reflections. A few stolen moments documented from a folding chair.
Dallas sportscaster Dale Hansen and a full frontal attack on the ‘kind of man’ we all seem to be comfortable with in the NFL. Then retired player Donté Stallworth drives the narrative home in a series of fantastic tweets.
Michael Sam’s coming out as gay is poking a male-culture tinder box with a lit stick for sure, but I’d rather to burn that box to the ground than keep stuffing our boys inside of it.
This development is giving me the first reason in years to give a crap about the NFL [Go Browns?]. I’ll keep watching this story closely. What about you?
